Examining Responses to a Racist Event in a Sorority and Fraternity Life Community: A Case Study

Racism has been interwoven in implicit and explicit ways within historically white sorority fraternity life (SFL) communities since their inception. However, few studies have provided insight to how practitioners address the realities of racism SFL broadly, or specifically attended race-based incidents on local campuses, success these initiatives, what degree actions sustainable over time. This project sought contribute dynamics by mobilizing a case study approach guided an institutional response framework focus particular community at Sunnydale University (a pseudonym) took steps following racist event that occurred campus. Using data collected from five professionals 19 students campus, as well documents, findings this revealed following: lack preparedness plan events, they moved toward immediate continued engagement equity work, challenges with striving racial equity. We then provide implications for higher education future research.
